The Dancing "Silver Spurs" - 1951
This is an excerpt from a half-hour film, made in 1951 by Standard Oil, about the Silver Spurs, a performing dance group from Spokane, WA. The group was founded in 1947 by E. S. "Red" Henderson, a teacher and recreation leader; the young dancers had an extensive repertoire that in addition to cowboy squares included historical dances (e.g., the Lancers) as well as dozens of international folk dances, one example of which (Korobushka) is included in this clip.
The Silver Spurs were a popular performing group and toured extensively; in summer of 1953, for example, they took a 25 day tour, visiting 23 states and covering 10,000 miles. Their program included everything from traditional and historical American dance to tango, rhumba, and dances of native American nations of the western United States. They also appeared on radio and television.
The group still exists today, nearly 75 years after Henderson started it.
