Middle of the Mound - Selmer Hovland, patter
This is a live recording of Selmer Hovland, from Wagon Mound, New Mexico, calling at Kirkwood Lodge, Missouri. Hovland was a staff member at a Square Dance Institute that featured Les Gotcher. (One of the Related Items is Gotcher calling a double teacup chain from that same event.)
We think today of modern square dance calling as a series of seemingly improvised hash calls; this audio file includes a walkthrough and serves as a reminder that in much of the 1950s callers were teaching and calling specific routines that were practiced beforehand, much as traditional squares or contra dances are today. Here, Hovland spend 3-1/2 minutes walking dancers through the figures before he starts up the music: "Okay, you got it? Let's give her a try anyway!"
