Hotshot Callers - Joe Lewis
Creator: Joe Lewis (1950s)
In this recording, Joe Lewis highlights the plight of an average square dancer who just wants to go out for an evening of fun. Instead, he's confronted by a hotshot caller using all manner of newfangled calls that leave the dancer baffled: "I wish that feller would say just what he means!" Lewis is touching on many of the same ideas that he describes in his later 1959 talk.
Lewis is using a basic "talking blues" style in this recording, basing his song on the hit song, "Smoke Smoke Smoke that Cigarette," written by Tex Williams and Merle Travis and made popular upon its release in 1947. Listen to that song here.
