Description

Recorded by Bob Dalsemer, January 5, 1974 at the Maryland Line Fire Hall, Maryland Line, MD.
Caller: Donald "Jake" Jacoby
Band: The Saw Mill Boys

This version is a bit unusual in that the "lead couples" (i.e. the head couples) rather than the side couples face their partners to begin the Grand Square figure. The final two figures, "gents chain" and "couples chain" need some explanation. The gents' chain was usually performed with the gents giving right hands to each other and left hands to the ladies. Couples chain was also called "right and left through" by other callers from the same area. It was performed by the two opposite couples crossing over the set with one couple making an arch and the other going under - then both couples turning as a couple in the opposite place to face back in.

The band plays only one part of the polka tune "Bye, Bye My Baby." This arrangement may have derived from the recording "Grand Square Quadrille" by the late Bob Osgood from California.
