Foot 'n' Fiddle (Texas)
This journal was started in 1946 by Marlys Swenson (later Marlys Waller) and Anne Pittman, joined by Olcutt Sanders as another editor. It is among the earliest square dance magazines—Rod LaFarge's Rosin the Bow, with a more eclectic range of dances, started in 1945—but coming several years before Sets in Order or Northern Junket.
Texas in the 1940s was a hotbed of square dance activity. In the 1930s, there had been a series of square dance competitions, and many important figures in the burgeoning square dance movement came out of the Texas scene, including, for starters, Herb Greggerson, Ray Smith, Rickey Holden, Les Gotcher, Joe Lewis, Jimmy Clossin, Betty Casey, Bob Sumrall, Doc Alumbaugh, and Doc Journell. Foot 'n' Fiddle documents that scene, providing information about prominent figures, dance calls, festivals, and attempts to create a statewide federation of local clubs.
The early issues are sometimes called Foot 'n Fiddle, Foot n' Fiddle, or Foot 'n' Fiddle. (By March 1948, the cover is Foot 'n' Fiddle.) The founders sold the publication to Herb Greggerson in 1949; he later passed the magazine on to Bertha Holck as publisher. Holck co-edited with Herb Greggerson starting with vol 4 no 1 (November 1949) issue and began sole editorship with the vol 8 no 9 (November 1954) issue. The magazine ceased publication in 1957.
The first issue shown here was edited by Waller and Pittman, the second by Greggerson, and the third by Holck.
