Square and Couple Dances with Directions and Calls - Lloyd Shaw
This is a supplement to Cowboy Dances and Good Morning that was used in a 1947 summer session at the University of Colorado. "Most of these dances have been taken from the mimeographed material supplied by Lloyd Shaw during his 1945 summer class at the Cheyenne Mountain School, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Some of the variations described are those done by the Calico and Boots Club at the University of Colorado.
The collection includes four couple squares (both patter and singing calls) some instructions for big sets, and couple dances (round dances). In some cases, simple diagrams are used to explain the figures in more detail.
This collection provides directions for an interesting mix of dances and offers a helpful look at late 1940s repertoire. For example, on pages 4-7, we go from a detailed description of Turn that Line (With a Wagon Wheel and do-si-Ballinet), complete with patter and a series of diagrams, on to a singing square (The Old Pine Tree), to a Montana Version of Butterfly, based on Ford's Veleta Waltz, to a Swedish Waltz and then to Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight, a singing square.
