It's Fun To Square Dance
George Myers Stephens (1942)
This booklet is profusely illustrated with photographs and diagrams, making the dance figures easy to understand. Lunsford was the founder in 1928 of the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in Asheville, and continued as organizer and performer there until 1965. He played a key role in popularizing southern mountain dancing. From Lunsford's introduction:
===
"Southern Appalachian Square Dancing has the very sociable feature of moving the couples around the big ring as they dance each figure instead of keeping each "square" of four couples together during the whole set.
"Start with a "big ring'', break into circles of two couples for most figures - the odd couples traveling around repeating the figure with each even couple.
"If these calls and figures are not like those you may have found elsewhere, remember always that mountain square dancing varies from valley to valley. And it is still growing and being added to by the mountain people. That is why is it so very much alive."
===
Among the figures illustrated are:
Bird in the Cage
Ladies Bow, Gents Know How
Turn the Ring
Four Lead Clover
Ladies Whirl
Swing Grandpaw/Grandmaw/the Little Girl from Arkansaw
Subjects: Southern / Appalachian / Big sets
