Texas Square Dance Contests
These are a series of newspaper clippings made by J. Olcutt Sanders, documenting Texas square dance competitions. (Unfortunately, most of them are undated.) We assume that these are from Fort Worth; the articles refer to the Southwest Exposition and Fat Stock Show, an annual event that is still ongoing in Fort Worth, now called the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. In addition, author Ida Belle Hicks was a columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Rickey Holden's booklet, Square Dances of West Texas, devotes several pages to square dance contests of the late 1930s. Bob Sumrall started his team around 1936 (when he was 20) and embarked on a lengthy series of wins, although in 1938, Herb Greggerson's Blue Bonnet Set traveled more than 600 miles from El Paso to Fort Worth to win its first state championship.
