Catch All Eight - Louise Winston
This is an interesting example of a modern square dance call turning up in the repertoire of a caller deeply involved in the New England traditional square dance scene.
Louise Winston was one of the few women callers in New England in the years immediately after World War II. A friend of Ralph Page and Rod Linnell, she started calling in 1945. After Linnell's death, she edited the book Square Dances from a Yankee Caller's Clipboard (1974). Winston also maintained a detailed diary that described many dance events throughout New England; these diaries, with their valuable commentary on the dance scene she knew so well, are part of the Louise Winston Collection at the University of New Hampshire.
This audio file was recorded by Tony Parkes on May 28, 1970.
Paul Hunt recorded this figure, just as Winston taught it (and to the same tune, Golden Slippers), for Michael Herman in the early 1950s under the title "Catch All Eight" (reissued on Folk Dancer CD #19). She mentions on the tape that the figure had been popular on the South Shore [of Boston] and out to Hyannis on Cape Cod, presumably in the '50s. She credits the move "catch all eight" to Kentucky Mountain dancing, but it may have come instead from Texas.
