Dancing's Dilemma - Dancing Around Denver
Dianne Gum hosted a public access show in Denver for some 15 years. In this hour-long program, recorded in 1996, she is joined by veteran caller Cal Campbell to discuss challenges facing modern square dancing. Many of the comments and disturbing trends that the two discuss have been borne out in subsequent years.
Cal Campbell notes, "It’s now 20 years later. In 1996 there were 22 clubs in the Denver area. Now there are 13. None of these clubs have their own lessons any more. no single club can recruit even four couples. A combined set of lessons is lucky to draw 4 squares in a good year. That is far below the number needed to maintain any of the clubs."
Dianne Gum is a retired teacher of journalism in high school. The show was mostly square dancing and not the politics of square dancing. Sometimes she brought cameras to square dance events; footage interspersed here includes shots from the Colorado State Festival in 1996; this provides at look back at MWSD style at that time.
The Related Item, from Connecticut caller Ralph Sweet, looks at similar challenges as those discussed here.
