Social Dance in the Mormon West
Detailed look at the role that social dance played (and still plays) in Mormon society. The publication includes a lengthy essay by Larry Shumway looking at dance throughout Mormon history, including on the journey west to Utah.
In his preface, Craig Miller writes, "For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), social dance has always played an important role in building community. During pioneer times, dance was used to build social cohesion, and Mormon leaders made sure that each new settlement, from Mexico to Canada, had its own supply of dance musicians. A century and a half later, this heritage of community-based music and dance still survived in many Mormon communities throughout the Intermountain West."
