Running Set - Jim Wilkerson home recording
Creator: Jim Wilkerson (January 20, 1956)
This is a home recording made by caller Jim Wilkerson. We think WIlkerson was from Ohio, so this particular cut is an interesting example of how dance styles migrate. We typically think of a running set from farther south in the Appalachians, and Wilkerson's primary repertoire (see the related item) included a lot of singing calls, more typical of the northeast. To complicate matters further, the tune he selected for his recording is My Love Is But a Lassie Yet, frequently used for the Cumberland Square Eight, an English barn dance. By the mid-1950s, square dances were on the rise throughout the US and it's clear that callers were selecting material from many sources.
