Mental Image calling - Don Beck
Don Beck started calling more than 50 years ago. In this two-hour video, he provides an introduction to the Mental Image method of square dance choreographic management, a way for the caller to keep track of dancers. This subject is covered more extensively in his book, Out of Sight.
Beck explains that this technique falls somewhere between Calling Modules and true Sight Calling. In an e-mail to SDHP, Beck explained that goal here was "to prove to callers that you can successfully call ad-lib choreography without being dependent on the dancers, by basically only following one key dancer in your head. It’s also an insight into the technical workings behind the scene of what is happening when you are calling."
In the video, he points out that by the end of his presentation, viewers will realize that this is possible, though he adds a disclaimer: You didn't learn to dance in an hour and a half, and you won't be able to do this technique right away. It'll take practice.
The talk was recorded at a meeting of the Springfield (MA) Area Callers' Association in 2013.
