Fall Lake George - outing clubs
This 2007 newspaper article describes an annual gathering of outing clubs at Lake George, New York. For many decades, young people interested in outdoor activities-- hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, etc.-- would gather for special events. Square dancing was frequently a major activity during the evening.
This particular event was sponsored by the RPI Outing Club (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), but many colleges and universities throughout the Northeast have similar organizations.
Elena Perez, a member of the RPI Outing Club, has been researching the history of square dancing in the club. She writes, "Still working on the origins of Rensselaer Outing Club. I can definitely say that ROC has been around since 1932, but can't say for sure if it's been longer. We've been doing square dances for a long time though. I was looking through old newsletters for the origins of ROC and stumbled upon an article from November 1947 that celebrated the first ROC square dance as a success."
