Square-Dance Figures from Northern New York State, 1931
Creator: Maud Karpeles (1931)
Maud Karpeles was a close associate of Cecil Sharp, the English folksong collector and founder of the English Folk Dance Society. While in Appalachia in 1917, Sharp and Karpeles had their first introduction to a group of dancers running a set, at the Pine Mountain Settlement School.
After Sharp's death in 1924, Karpeles continued collecting song and dance material in North America. This account explains her observations of dancers in northeastern New York, near the Adirondacks.
