Squareback Reel - Tony Parkes
Tony Parkes calls this composition by Roger Whynot at the Dare To Be Square weekend held November 18-20, 2011, at the John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC.
The tune is "Red Apple Rag." Musicians are Steve Hickman and Jim Morrison, fiddles; Claudio Buchwald, piano; Sam Bartlett, banjo.
Roger Whynot wrote this figure in the early 1970s on the way home from calling a dance. At the time Roger was driving a Volkswagen Squareback, and Tony suggested naming the figure for the car. (The Squareback was ideal for a traveling caller or musician: it was a station wagon with its engine under the rear floor, resulting in storage space both in the rear and under the "hood".)
Roger was mentoring Tony informally at the time, and challenged him to write a figure beginning with "heads pass through and turn alone". After reading Tony's attempt, Roger produced this one, which Tony agreed was superior.
