Parisian Star - Tony Parkes
Tony Parkes taught this dance during his workshop session on New England Square Dances, recorded November 19, 2011, at the Dare To Be Square Weekend, John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC. Co-sponsored by the Country Dance and Song Society (CDSS), the event brought together six experienced callers representing different styles of traditional and modern square dance with about 70 square dance enthusiasts.
Tony took a figure from "The Parisian Varieties," a five-figure quadrille from about 1870. The original shifted back and forth between march time and waltz time; Tony said that he took out the waltz "to make it more accessible, so any caller could use it with any band." He also added the partner change, not found in the original.
Musicians for this workshop were Jim Morrison and Steve Hickman, fiddles; Claudio Buchwald, piano; Sam Bartlett, banjo. The tune is "Farewell to Whiskey."
