Al Brundage – Live recording, 1952
Early MWSD choreography
This recording is an example of what local callers in southern New England were calling in 1952. The location is not identified. Al says he is using a record without speed control on the player (which was not readily available at that time), which suggests that the setting was one of the clubs that he started after returning from Lloyd Shaw's summer institute in 1949.
The Birdie in the Cage routine was in common use at that time and did not require any explanation. The routine was repeated four times in exactly the same way. The breaks between the routines alternated between two common routines. It is interesting to note that Al uses the name Docey Doe for the pattern that he and Herb Greggerson agreed at Shaw's would be called Do Paso.
The tape starts with the end of the Birdie In the Cage routine for lady #1 and continues with a repetition of the figure for ladies 2, 3 and 4.
Home you go and square your set
It's lady two to the right
Turn the right hand gent with the right hand around
Partner left as you come down
And now your opposite gent with the right hand around
And partner left as you come down
And now the left hand gent with the right hand around
And now your partner left and sit her right down
The birdie in the middle and seven hands around
Put birdie in the middle of the ring and seven hands around that thing
Birdie jump out and the hawk jump in it's seven hands and gone again
Watch your step at the next command
Hawk jump out it's Allemande Left with a Left Allemande
And your partner right hand, a Grand Chain all
A Grand Right and Left around the hall, Grand Right and Left
And meet your partner, Promenade
Two by two with the pretty little maid

Promenade home and home you go and
Everybody ready with a heel and toe
And lady number three
