Grey Eagle Square Dance with the New Lost City Ramblers
This program appeared on German television during the 1966 European tour by the New Lost City Ramblers (NLCR), with Roscoe Holcomb, the Stanley Brothers, Cousin Emmy and others. If you can identify the caller, please let us know!
More information about the NLCR is available in a lengthy article by Philip Gura published in two parts in the Old-Time Herald (December 1999 and April 2000 issues.) That magazine at the moment does not have its contents digitally archived. You can also read another article by Gura ("Southern Roots and Branches: Forty Years of the New Lost City Ramblers" published in Southern Cultures, Volume 6, Number 4, Winter 2000, pp. 58-81, and available online here.
2025 update (thank you, Gary Reid):
Here are a few tidbits concerning the German television production from March 1966.
A number of American military personnel formed square dance groups in Germany, England, and other places.
This event was mentioned in Stars and Stripes (March 9, 1966, page 13):
To add color to the square dance music, TV director Horst Lippman invited four couples and a caller from American clubs. Groups that were around in 1966 included:
Frankfurt — Beaux and Belles (formed 1954)
Mannheim — Mannheim Mixers (Joe Philips - 1966 head of club)
Wiesbaden — Kuntry Kuzins
The other is correspondence with John R. Swee, who apparently was in charge of rounding up the square dancers for the show. Aside from the mention of a Mr & Mrs Boyd, no other names are mentioned:
