Challenge Square Dancing - C4
This half-hour video was shot at the Fall Berkshires C4 Weekend in Lenox, MA on October 22, 2011. It contains dance sequences and interviews with avid C4 dancers who describe the more complicated forms of MWSD and the several CALLERLAB programs. Much of the explanation is by Clark Baker who is a Challenge Program caller and was a member of the CALLERLAB Board of Governors and Executive Committee at that time.
In Modern Western Square Dancing the dancers learn a vocabulary (69 calls for Mainstream, over 1000 for C4) but do not memorize a dance pattern. Instead the caller puts the calls together in an ever changing order and the dancers respond in real time. While the dancers were familiar with the vocabulary, they had never heard the particular sequences of calls before, and did not know what was going to be called. See Wikipedia for general information about modern square dance programs as well as other resources in this project for more information.
CALLERLAB recognizes Mainstream, Plus, Advanced, and Challenge (C1, C2, and C3A). The C3B and C4 dance programs are further steps in complexity.
For a detailed response to some common conceptions about Challenge dancing, see Clark Baker's article.
