Three singing squares - Vermont, 1956
Three singing squares from an October 6, 1956 recording of the Dick Perry Orchestra and caller Ira Huntley playing a square dance in Newfane, Vermont. Original tape donated to the Vermont Folklife Center by John Stone. This audio is very clear, professionally digitized by the VFC staff.
1) Marching through Georgia: Note that the caller finishes the figure by singing, "As we go marching together" or "same as we did down in Georgia" instead of the more common "as we go marching through Georgia."
2) Two Head Gents Cross Over (Wearing of the Green)
3) Belle of the Ball
Vermont Public Radio aired a short story about the memories evoked by listening to this clip, an interview with John Stone, who made the original recording.
