Square Dance Caller's Workshop - Larry Edelman
Starting in 1988, Larry Edelman led a series of classes for square dance callers at weekend and week-long dance camps. This is the basic text for that course, included with his permission. The 52-page Workbook contains philosophy, teaching tips, dance figures, and a lengthy bibliography.
You can view videotaped interviews of Larry talking about different aspects of square dance, and can view videos of Larry calling square dances.
From his 2013 introduction: "In 1988, I published a workbook titled Square Dance Callers Workshop Outline to accompany the weeklong workshops that I lead for square dance callers. I revised this workbook several times between 1988 and 1990. In 1991, I did a major revision, shortening the title a bit to Square Dance Callers Workshop, but it still remained a companion to the weeklong workshop, rather than a stand-alone text. I revised it several more times between 1991 and 1996. I had every intention of continuing to update the text, but my interests changed and I became less interested in print documentation and more interested in finding old films and producing new videos of square dancing, calling, and fiddle music. In 1996 I printed the Square Dance Callers Workshop for the last time and it has been out-of-print since 2003.
"Over the years, I've received many requests for copies of the Workbook, but I've resisted reprinting it because it is significantly dated, and there are so many corrections, changes, and additions that I'd like to make that I would need to simply start all over. I haven't had the time, and, as I mentioned before, I'd rather tell the story through film and video.
"So even though the Workbook is dated (I cringe when I read all of the parts that I'd like to change!) I realize it might still have some value and perhaps it does belong with kindred ephemeral square dance texts."
