Title

Santa Monica 1950 - World's Largest Square Dance

Description

At the time, it was the world's largest square dance event. Santa Monica, California, was celebrating its Diamond Jubilee in square dance style. Lloyd Shaw was invited to be the Grand Marshall of the the parade and he acted as MC for the dance, along with Bob Osgood, on July 13, 1950.

Dancing lasted for four hours, and some 30,000 people watched as 15,200 people danced in the streets from evening into the night. See the many related items following this for more information about the event. The interview with Bob Osgood is particularly informative about the preparations for the event.

We currently have one audio clip—with caller Cal Golden— from the event on our site. A complete audio recording was made of the dance and we hope to add more clips in time.
