Grand Square magazine
Grand Square
As a means of communication among the widely scattered Northern New Jersey Square Dancers Association membership, Grand Square was created in March 1959 by Bob Keck. Grand Square became the "official publication" of the NNJSDA and at the outset was published five times a dance season. Bob was succeeded by Bill Geier in September of 1963. When business pressures caused him to resign, Bill turned the task over to Peg & Doc Tirrell in the fall of 1965.
Grand Square became Peg & Doc's labor of love for the next 25 years. As the Association grew and changed, so did Grand Square, Peg & Doc transformed the issue from three 8 1/2 x 11 mimeographed pages to a 64-page book that became one of the best square dance publications in the country. In June of 1990, Peg & Doc retired as Editors and Kathy & Charlie Porter took over.
During the subsequent years Grand Square reduced its publication to three editions a year. Manny Amor returned to Grand Square with his popular Square View cartoon. In 1998 the article Sewing Circle was discontinued. In 2000 Charlie & Kathy Porter retired as Editors of the Grand Square, after serving 10 years in this position. Norman & Barbara Kanter and Louis and Jan Thompson joined forces to become the Co-Editors.
Under the Kanters and Thompsons Grand Square had the honor of receiving recognition at the national conventions as being one of the best regional publications in the country. During their watch the Grand Square also was digitalized and went on-line. In 2010 the Thompsons and Kanters retired after 10 years as editors and Chris Patrick took over as editor. Chris was editor through January 2011 when Mary Ann Ryan-Erdek took over. Lise Greene joined as co-editor for several issues and became the sole editor in May 2014..
