When Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip squared danced during a visit to Ottawa in 1951, photographs from the event created a sensation and led to a rapid upsurge of interest in square dancing in England.

Ben Cohen is a reporter with the Toronto Star. In April of 2022, he was working on a project cataloging and contextualizing photos of Queen Elizabeth II in Canada. He contacted the SDHP; we in turn sent him to the University of Denver, where Bob Osgood's extensive materials are archived. Within a short time, DU archivist Nathalie Proulx DeSalvo unearthed the letters between Bob Osgood and Bob & Ruth Pereira. They had been at the event and later collected background information about how it came to be.
