Broom Dance - Ava, Missouri
In modern square dance programs, squares are often intermingled with round dances. Similarly, traditional dance programs often involve a variety of dances other than squares—waltz, polka, schottische, mixers, novelty dances are a few examples.
This clip shows a Broom Dance, recorded in southern Missouri. This dance is a mixer that switches between waltz and two-step time. The person without a partner at each switch has to dance with the broom until the music changes again.
The caller is Edna Mae Davis of Ava. The band consists of Bob Holt & Charlie Walden on fiddle and Alvie Dooms on guitar. The tunes are Over the Waves and Down Yonder.
There are many examples of couple dances included in the SDHP collection. Click on this link to go to a listing.
