Square Dance - panel discussion
The consultants for the Square Dance History Project look at different aspects of square dance history. Participants include David Millstone, Tony Parkes, Phil Jamison, Bob Dalsemer, Jim Mayo, Larry Edelman, and Bill Litchman.
The hour-long discussion looks at the different styles of square dancing in regions of North America, the influence of migration patterns on cultural transmission, the seminal role of Lloyd Shaw in creating modern square dancing, the "dance community" vs. "community dance", the rise of contra dancing, Recorded at the John C. Campbell Folk School, November 2011, just before the opening session of Dare to Be Square that year.
The discussion was followed by individual interviews with each of the participants, also available here on the SDHP website. The discussion was recorded by John-Michael Seng-Wheeler, who also filmed the dances during the weekend.
