Glenville, WV Square Dances called by Mack Samples
The dances (with instruction) are:
Butterfly Whirl
First Boy to the Right
Grapevine Twist
Take a Little Peek
Texas Star_Take a Little Peek
Bob Dalsemer writes: "These recordings were made on May 11, 1978. I invited Mack Samples to visit the Elkins, WV Dance Society and teach traditional square dances from the area around Glenville, WV. Samples worked for some 20 years as a Dean at Glenville State College. As an avid musician and dance caller, he tirelessly promoted local dance and music traditions. In 2003 he received the Vandalia Award, West Virginia’s highest honor for the preservation of folk heritage.
"The musicians for this workshop were Stuart Light, fiddle and myself on guitar. Descriptions of the dances can be found in Chapter III of my book West Virginia Square Dances, available, free, online:
https://www.cdss.org/elibrary/wvasquares/glenville.html
Samples gave his permission (August, 2019) for the files to be shared and added, "I am still a very active caller and my band is still playing gigs. Also have 11 books in print...West Virginia based stories with lots of music intertwined.”
