Circle Up Zine (Volume 1) - A collection of square dances and thoughts towards promoting inclusivity
This is a square dance calling resource that features inclusive square dance adaptations, in the form of a printed zine. When caller/dancer/organizer Becky Hill envisioned the project, she enlisted 17 square dance callers ranging in age from 25 to 94 years old to share their adapted square dances with an eye to gender-neutral calls. The result is this publication, which addresses this and other ways to make square dances more inclusive.
“Circle Up” is a collection of thoughts, dances, and responses on how square dance holds the potential to make room for everyone. Launched in the summer of 2023, it was funded through the Mid-Atlantic Arts Central Appalachia Living Tradition grant, a Country Dance and Song Society Mini-Grant, and Bluegrass Pride.
This project was envisioned by Becky Hill and involves the brain trust of Emily Prentice, A'yen Tran, Jen Cooney, Lou Maiuri, Abby Huggins, Hannah Johnson, Ben Nelson, Beth Molaro, Joe Burdock, Tyler Hughes, Gabe Strand, Alex Udis, Janine Smith, Ellen & Eugene Ratcliffe, Anne Beal, Anna RG, Will Mentor, T-Claw, Nevada Tribble, Lindsay McCaw, and Mack Samples.
Zine - A zine (pronounced ZEEN) is short for "fanzine" and is usually a small-batch, independently published work that circulates less than 1,000 copies.
