Seated Square Dance, Janine Smith
Caller Janine Smith (MD) calling a seated (sitting) square dance in a video created during the pandemic lockdown when dancing in person was impossible. Janine got her inspiration for this form of square dance from caller Fred Wersan (MA).
These dances are ideal for dancers who might be mobility or endurance challenged. This format is also very adaptable - you don’t really need 8 people for a dance, and by nature it is gender neutral. Dancers can add their own ideas for figures, allowing for creative expression and some crazy FUN shenanigans.
During the 2 years of live dances being shut down due to Covid, Janine called virtual dances over zoom - to live music played by musicians in various parts of the world. She always included a Sitting (Seated) Square Dance, adapting it for a solo dancer, since many of us were home alone.
Here's a dance made up from suggestions dancers posted in the chat during a virtual dance. It’s just plain silly. Enjoy!
The tune is North Carolina Breakdown played by Baltimore, MD based musicians Ken and Brad Kolodner on hammered dulcimer and gourd banjo.
