Grandma Slid Down the Mountain - Tod Whittemore
Caller Tod Whittemore with his yodeling square dance, "Grandma Slid Down the Mountain." As Tod says in his introduction, "This is a dance by Ted Sannella... but he never called it exactly like this." (Tod based his dance on Ted Sannella's Presque Isle Eight, which in turn borrowed from Maine caller Rod Linnell's dance, Presque Isle Eighth.) Tod had called the dance once earlier in the weekend-- his yodeling squares were popular among the dancers-- and at this Sunday afternoon repeat performance he was joined in the yodeling by musician Bob McQuillen.
Musicians include Rodney Miller, fiddle, and Marianne Taylor, piano, joined by Marko Packard, saxophone, Jane Orzechowski, fiddle, and Deanna Stiles, flute.
The Square Dance History Project contains some 250 singing squares, which you can view or listen to from this list.
