1988 Calgary Olympics - costume
This is a costume worn by dancers at the gala square dance that formed part of the opening ceremony at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. See the related item for video footage of that dance routine choreographed by Gloria Rios Roth.
Jane Kinzer, whose costume this was, writes, "Calgarians were asked to volunteer to come out and begin dancing with established clubs beginning in Sept. 1987. Each club knew what steps we needed to learn and these were incorporated into regular dance sessions. Each person was measured and fitted for their costumes. We began to have rehearsals for the event a couple of months ahead. We learned the routine and practiced in smaller groups and then just before the event we began with the whole group. It was a thrilling time to be a Calgarian and even though it was bitterly cold for the actual ceremonies, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world."
