Bluebonnet Squares with Melton Luttrell
These are recordings of two sessions led by Melton Luttrell at the 1987 National Square Dance Convention in Houston, Texas. The focus of his sessions was square dancing as led by Herb Greggerson in the late 1930s. The session includes frequent comments by Luttrell mixed in with called dances using recordings that illustrated typical music used at that time.
In his introduction, Luttrell comments, "Herb Greggerson probably did more than any one person insofar as western square dancing in concerned to influence what we're dancing in the square dance field today, and I'm not saying that lightly. I firmly believe that." He acknowledges the role of Lloyd Shaw in promoting the activity, but adds, "but all of this time while Dr. Shaw is getting this material together, a large part of it is coming from Herb Greggerson."
The second recording has Luttrell carefully explaining the basics of West Texas dancing, describing the terms used and the particular style of dance. For example, in West Texas, when the call was Sashay Round Your Corner, the men would pass in front of their corner, and then in front of their partner (taw), whereas in East Texas (Dallas, etc.) the men would pass behind the corners.
