Lloyd Shaw stories, #4
This is part 1 of 5, four audio clips and one video that present a History and Heritage session about Lloyd "Pappy" Shaw, recorded at the 1989 CALLERLAB convention. Participants on the panel were Bob Osgood, chair; Herb Egender, a member of Shaw's Cheyenne Mountain Dancers in 1939, and Bob Howell, Ohio dance caller.
This audio clip presents Howell's section of the workshop. He had been calling for several years before he met Shaw and he describes how that experience changed him as a caller, giving him a richer sense of the caller's role. He describes Shaw's dynamic personality, and he discusses the vital role played by Dorothy Shaw, the "silent partner." More information about Lloyd and Dorothy Shaw is contained in an exhibit in this collection.
Bob Howell can be viewed calling Sashay Over and Back and This Land Is Your Land.
The audio was extracted from the VHS videotape and compressed to save bandwidth; the camera was stationary in the back of the room, and the sound was recorded by the on-camera mic. Part 5 of the series is the video footage of the final 20 minutes of the session.
